Harriet the Spy
Harriet M. Welsch is one of the most influential characters in my life. Unabashedly honest and fiercely independent, she was one of the only female protagonists I ever encountered in whom I saw myself. To celebrate this wonderful book and bring it into adulthood, I typeset the novel through the lens of mid-century design. With colors selected from 1960s fabric and type lifted from Swiss design, I created clean and readable spreads. Alongside Louise Fitzhough's original illustrations, the occasional wonky text alignment brings a sense of childlike whimsy to the book—a reminder that while this is a favorite of many adults, it is first and foremost for children.
